The Elkhart County Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes Program has made 200 homes lead safe throughout the county and we need your help to make 140 more!
Lead-based paint was commonly used on windows, doors, and interior and exterior surfaces of homes built before 1978. The program works to remediate lead-based paint from these houses by replacing windows, doors, siding and painted surfaces with non-leaded alternatives. Exposure to dust from lead-based paint has the potential to cause long term health problems in children including learning disabilities, hyperactivity, hearing damage, brain impairment or even death.
There is now money available for property owners and managers to assist with the renovation of lead based paint hazards. The program is geared toward families with small children (spending 6 or more hours in the home per week), and is focused on homes with low income families living in them. Landlords of older rental houses or apartments are also eligible to apply for the program.
